Timor-Leste Day

On November 28th, 1975, Timor-Leste declared its independence from Portugal.  Although this declaration was short-lived due to invasion and occupation, it remains eternal in meaning.  After decades of struggle, the dream was finally realized in 2002, when Timor-Leste emerged as one of the world’s newest democracies.  Independence Day honors the resilience and courage of its people who never gave up on freedom.

Known for its rugged beauty and warm spirit, Timor-Leste stands as a beacon of perseverance.  Each November 28th, the nation reflects on its past with reverence and looks ahead with hope while building a society grounded in peace, unity, and self-determination.  The day celebrates not just the end of colonialism, but the triumph of endurance, identity, and the unbreakable will of a people who refused to be forgotten.
