Islam and Women

As part of University Express, Faizan and his wife, Dr. Riffat Sadiq, did a lecture on Islam and Women. The complex relationship between women and Islam is defined by both Islamic texts and the history and culture of the Muslim world. Together, they examined Sharia (Islamic law) as it relates to differences between women’s and men’s roles, rights, and obligations, including marriage, divorce, civil rights, legal status, dress code, and education.

Faizan Haq and Taqdees Razzaq of George Mason presented on “Pakistani-Americans at the crossroads”. Malik Haq, Muhammad Rumi of Islamic Center Rochester and Muhammad Shafiq of Nazareth presented on “Pakistan Historical perspectives, Politics & Identity”. And there was a round table on “Peace & Economic Development in South Asia” conducted by Vikash Yadav and Feisal Khan of Hobart and more discussion.

Pakistani American Youth Empowerment Conference

PAKPAC Foundation held the first Pakistani American Youth Empowerment Conference. Over 165 Pakistani Americans travelled to Washington DC from 15 different states ranging as far as California and Texas, for a marathon 14- hour to experience to learn firsthand how American government functions. The event started with a tour of the White House and Capitol Hill. This was followed by a three hour panel session where Pakistani and Muslim from different governmental and legislative departments addressed youth and shared their experiences. As part of University Express, Faizan did a lecture on Yemen. Yemen is the only republic on the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen also is the area’s poorest country facing challenges of the civil war, resource depletion, and crippling unemployment and illiteracy. Yemen catapulted to the top of the international security agenda following the December 2009 attempted attack on a US airliner. In this Presentation Faizan Haq talked about the current state of US-Yemeni Relations and the relationships between Yemen and other Middle Eastern countries.
